Wachusett Greenways sponsored a walk on the unused Central Mass rail bed in Hardwick January 27.It was a beautiful day, full sun and cool with a little snow cover. After the walk, we had lunch in the original Central Mass depot in Gilbertville. When the Mass Central Railroad (original name) was being built in the early 1800's word came that the Swift River Valley was to become another water reservoir for Boston. Therefore the proposed route of the railroad had to be changed and was diverted south from Gilbertville to Ware and Palmer. This left the partially built railroad bed in Hardwick to be abandoned for the southern route. Most of the rail bed is now under the Quabbin Reservoir but a small section is still there south of Greenwich Road.
